Ol' Blue Eyes
Goodbye, Norma Jean is a 1976 film that I've never heard of. Wikipedia says almost nothing about it. Presumably, the title is a line from the 1973 song Candle in the Wind by Elton John.
Hundreds of books and numerous films, plays, operas, songs and documentaries have been about Marilyn Monroe. Wikipedia states she remains a cultural icon.
Wikipedia says she dated Frank Sinatra for a few months in 1961 and then returned to the public eye in the spring of 1962.
Marilyn Monroe sang "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" to John F. Kennedy on May 19, 1962. She died August 4, 1962, possibly simply because she was apparently in very poor health, though conspiracy theories abound in part because she was linked to both Frank Sinatra and President Kennedy and Frank Sinatra was rumored to be in the Mafia.
An article in People indicates Marilyn Monroe met JFK in 1954, he had an affair with her and passed her off to his brother in the spring of 1962, which is shortly before her death. She supposedly threatened to go to the press about her relationship to both of them, which implies to me she probably was pressured into the relationship and not really voluntarily involved with either of them.
JFK dies dramatically in November 22, 1963. Similar to Marilyn Monroe, he continues to be talked about decades after his death. There is a Wikipedia article for things named in honor of him and a separate Wikipedia article for cultural depictions of him.
Relatively little gets said about the fact that both of these giants were linked to Frank Sinatra, a man described as one of the most influential entertainers of the 20th century.
So Marilyn Monroe died in August 1962 and JFK dies in November 1963 and Frank Sinatra married 21 year old Mia Farrow in 1966. Previous posts by me on this site speculate she was probably a teenager when they got involved, so either not long after these two dramatic deaths or during the same general timeframe and those deaths may have been due in part to their relationship to Frank Sinatra, purported mob boss.
Mia Farrow strikes me as a real piece of work. In addition to what I've written about her here, I mention her in a piece elsewhere called Hollyweird and she is the adoptive mother of Soon-Yi Previn.
So Mia Farrow raised an adoptive daughter as one of her fourteen children who ultimately married Woody Allen, a man widely believed to be a child molester and the only father Soon-Yi Previn ever knew and whose sexual relationship to Previn began when he was STILL shacked up out of wedlock with Mia Farrow because the public record of those events indicate Mia Farrow's relationship to Woody Allen officially ended due to the discovery of his relationship to Soon-Yi Previn.
Why would a seemingly unusually ethical and extraordinarily socially savvy highly eligible man like Frank Sinatra sleep with and marry someone so very young during what appears to be an especially dangerous time in his life, a timeframe I speculate he was trying to lay low because things were so hot?
Is he a monster and callous bastard not caring about the fact that standing next to him seems to be getting people killed right and left?
Or did she approach him and offer a seasoned mob boss a deal so nasty and backstabbing that he decided this was a bedwarmer they were welcome to execute as it would be doing him a favor?
I'm thinking probably the latter because he then gets rid of her by making her a star.
That reads to ME like:
1. Pissing on the women's liberation movement he didn't really approve of by seeming to be an ally while giving them an unethical and incompetent role model to follow.
2. Getting rid of Mia Farrow in a way that shuts off all hope of rekindling the relationship at a later date AKA "burning" her.
3. Doing so such that she is obligated to be grateful to him personally and is consistently described as having remained friends with him until his death, which reads to me as probably neutralizing a pit viper and keeping her harmless while keeping an eye on her in a "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer" fashion.
4. The relationship lasted only as long as he needed to lay low and then she was out of there like a rocket. He ONLY kept her around during the time when standing next to him was apparently a really good way to end up DEAD.
That's not a relationship that sounds like he cared about her. That sounds like a relationship that made a good heat shield temporarily and then he was happy to dispose of it at the first opportunity.
Mia Farrow continues to talk about Frank Sinatra well after his death. In addition to "joking" that her youngest biological child might be his, I recently tripped across an article quoting her saying "Frank Sinatra would have loathed Donald Trump."
Weirdly, the article then documents his daughter saying "He actually did loathe him." and then gets into the details of WHY.
So Mia Farrow is name dropping like "I was MARRIED to him! I know how he would feel about this!" and people actually close to him heard from his own lips that he said such things. Oh, and also, reporters know what actually happened for realzy realz between Frank Sinatra and Donald Trump that inspired such hatred.
But, you know, we should care what Mia Farrow thinks because she SLEPT with him once, by God! Perhaps we should interview hookers henceforth to get the skinny on the views of their clients because having SEX with a man clearly makes YOU the expert on everything they would say about a topic.
I infer Mia Farrow was NEVER that close to Sinatra, STILL has her identity and feelings invested in that brief shining moment she dated nicer men than Woody Allen -- nicer being the Mafia -- and can't get over him.
Ergo, Mia Farrow is a big fat nobody who has never really done anything with her life that tops her enormous accomplishment of getting into the pants of Frank Sinatra.
And never mind she did so during a time in his life when any decent man should have been sleeping alone for fear that being in his bed might get you killed. And then he politely burned her under circumstances where -- by evidence of her joke and how much the kid LOOKS like Frank -- she told the world "We're FRIENDS!" while still being used as a fuck toy.
And Frank Sinatra did not even pay child support for the kid. And though she's eager to name drop -- "See! He kept FUCKING me! I'm so SPECIAL!" -- she wasn't special enough to quietly ask for child support as best I can tell and never sued him in court for knocking her up and then washing his hands of the brat and not his problem.
