Thine Own Self

A woman I knew once blew some guy's mind by observing that the movie Aliens "is a chick flick: The three main characters -- Ripley, Newt and the alien queen -- are all female."

The Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Thine Own Self is kind of like Aliens. It nominally stars the android character Data -- note how technically he's not really a man because he's not human -- but both storylines in the episode are female centered.

Down on the planet, Data primarily interacts with a female scientist and a little girl. Up on the ship, the plot revolves around Deanna Troi being inspired by a conversation with Dr. Beverly Crusher to get qualified as a captain, though Crusher only serves as "nightwatch" when Picard is sleeping.

I like the reason given for Crusher's decision to get qualified. As a physician,  she didn't need the qualifications. Her answer:

I also like the episode because Troi is failing a test designed to see if she can make the hard decisions. I think this is probably much more true for most women failing at something than people think, and then she and others chalk it up to "sexism" when her gender has nothing to do with it.

I spoke once with a longstanding female employee at my corporate job. She missed the entry level job I had.

It was a more interesting job in part because it was more technically challenging. The claims I reviewed had a longer list of benefits and involved reading accident reports and emergency room reports and police reports.

Her job was boring. It involved a short list of benefits and there was no exciting police drama plot to the claims.

It didn't pay more due to requiring more smarts or something like that. She simply authorized much bigger checks than I did.

It paid more because they were trusting her more with the company's money. And I think that generalizes: The jobs that make the big bucks are positions of trust.

You have power. They need reason to think you won't abuse it and will do what is required by the job, though it may not be fun or make you popular or otherwise have immediate short-term payoff aside from "You get to keep your job."
