Either with or without you

The song starts with his perspective:
You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
When I met you
I picked you out, I shook you up
And turned you around
Turned you into someone new
Refreshingly and somewhat unusually, it later gives her perspective:
I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
That much is true
But even then I knew I'd find a much better place
Either with or without you
She had goals. He helped her meet them. That doesn't mean she's his plaything or that she would be nothing without him.

Much of the song is him whining about how she's leaving him and he doesn't want her to go. The song paints a picture of a man emotionally desperate who won't give her any credit or validation and who is suffocating her because he wants to feel very self important.

If you need someone, pissing all over them is not the way to keep them. If you truly believe you matter more than them and they would be nothing without you and so forth, then why are you trying so desperately to hold onto them?

Unfortunately, what is clear to the woman in this song is not clear to the man. He cannot see her as a person in her own right who had dreams and goals, who steadily worked towards them and was happy to jump on opportunity when it presented itself.

Perhaps if he could see that, she wouldn't have dumped him.
