A clip from The Beach

As noted in previous posts, my mental model for how to sort out my life is rooted in the idea that women get raised to live a private life dealing only with people very close to them and not having real power of their own and men get raised to have a public life where they deal a lot with people who do not know them well but also have some measure of real power in the world.

Male dominated cultures start with the idea that you are NOTHING and have to prove yourself and build UP from nothing. Female culture starts with this idea that you deserve some baseline respect to start but then tears you down to see what survives a winnowing process.

I love the above clip because the guy facing a bullet is telling a woman "Go ahead and pull the trigger. If you do, it's OVER." She does and even though the gun is not loaded, so he does not get shot, most people promptly flee.

Having seen that she is willing to commit murder in cold blood for a relatively trivial purpose, no one wants to stay around her. No one wants to remain a part of her secret little "paradise."

All she did was reveal to everyone that she was no one anyone could trust. The farmer who handed her the empty gun smiles as everyone flees.
